Lowville, NY: By the Author, 1893-1928. Text: 9 parts in 3 volumes and 14 volumes of wood samples. Together 17 volumes. 8vo (samples 225 x 150 mm). 942 thin wood samples on 314 cards, each in transverse, radial and tangential sections. Modern blue gilt lettered cloth and slipcases. Condition: title page soiled, light spotting, some samples damaged or lacking. Sold not subject to return. first edition of hough's remarkable work on american woods. Hough devoted most of his life to the study and sample collection necessary for this monumental publication and his Handbook of Trees of the Northern States and Canada. A unique undertaking that would be impossible in woods of today, the work is of considerable interest to students of dendrology and American furniture making.
