London: Printed by T.B. for Humphrey Moseley, 1642. 12 o (140 x 80 mm). Additional engraved title page by Wenceslaus Hollar engraved portrait of Prince Charles. (Some occasional minor spotting, small hole at H1 affecting a few letters.) 18th-century sheep, morocco lettering-piece on spine (some rubbing and minor scuffing). Provenance : William Appleton (signature dated"1800" on verso of engraved title); John Appleton (signatures dated "1828" on front endpapers); Thomas Appluton (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. Howell had acquired some knowledge of European customs and languages while traveling as an employee of a London glass works. Here he writes a practical guide book to the continent, advising the discerning traveler to imitate the best in each nation and providing numerous historical, political, and linguistic observations. Howell's Instructions proved extremely valuable to those royalists fleeing into exile to escape the English Civil War. This copy is signed "Iames Howell" at end but without the imprint on the title-page as found in other copies. ESTC mentions both variants but gives neither precedence.
