A Humboldt / Berlin Mai 1843." An inscribed portrait of the great Prussian naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt who, along with French botanist Aime Bonpland, conducted one of the most significant scientific expeditions of the 19th century, covering some 6,000 miles on the Orinoco River, across the Andes, and extending to Mexico and Cuba. The German philologist Johann Karl Eduard Buschmann [1805-1880] assisted von Humboldt's brother, the distinguished philosopher and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt, in his study of Javanese languages. Buschmann was later employed by Alexander von Humboldt to prepare the manuscript of his final masterwork, Kosmos (1845-59).
