Philosophical Essays Concerning Human Understanding. London: A. Millar, 1748. 12mo (166 x 95 mm). iv, 256, [4 ad] pp. Contemporary calf rebacked and recornered, spine gilt with morocco label. Some mild toning. Provenance: Hume scholar Dr. A.W. Colver; by descent to present owner. FIRST EDITION OF AN ENQUIRY CONCERNING HUMAN UNDERSTANDING. One of the essential iterations of Hume's thought, the work did not take on its more familiar title until the edition of 1758. In it, Hume recasts portions of the first two books of the Treatise of Human Nature (lot 121), along with four essays: "Of the Different Species of Philosophy" and "Of the Academical or Sceptical Philosophy;" "Of Miracles" and "Of a Particular Providence and of a Future State." Hume was urged by his friend Henry Home not to publish the collection because of these last two essays, "two of Hume's most provocative forays into the philosophy of religion" (Cambridge Companion to Hume p 28). Fieser p 15; Jessop p 19.
