EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with the addition of 366 engravings and etchings, 17th-19th Century (comprising 264 portraits, one folding, 32 views (13 folding), 7 maps and plans (one folding) and 63 items of printed ephemera, including 29 pamphlets (disbound)), and 29 manuscript items. Among the prints is a small collection of etchings by Wenceslaus Hollar including: The Tower [Pennington 908], Tothill Fields [P. 913], Windsor [P. 914], two views of Elizabeth Castle in Jersey [P. 925], London before and after the Great Fire [P. 1015], Lambeth House [P. 1038], and White Hall [P. 1039]. Among the printed pamphlets and broadsides is a broadside entitled 'The manner and forme of the Arch-Bishops Triall in the House of Peeres,' with an engraving by Hollar, and an unrecorded pamphlet: John Cooke The Charge of the Commons of England against Charls Stuart , London: Rapha Harford, 1648 [vol. V]. Early 20th-century red hard-grained morocco gilt, spine lettered in two compartments and dated at the foot, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (very slight wear at extremities). A fascinating 'grangerised' copy of Hume's History with a wide variety of extra-illustrations. The autograph letters include: Royal letters: JAMES I. Letter signed to Lord Gray ('traist cousin'), Holyrood House, 29 January 1600/01, urging Gray to reconcile himself with his son, half page, folio , address panel; CHARLES I. Letter signed to Louis XIII, Westminster, 10 May 1625, in French, autograph subscription, formally thanking him for condolences on the death of James VI & I, one page, oblong 4to (skilful repairs to right margin); with cut signatures of ELIZABETH I (on vellum, 85 x 108mm (spotted)), MARY I with PHILIP II of Spain (on vellum, approximately 40 x 123mm (signature of Philip faded)) and Charles II; and [JAMES VI & I]. Privy Council document signed, Whitehall, 19 December 1607, warrant for paying the passage of 100 horse and 800 foot from Lancashire to fight in Ireland, one page, folio ; Letters by Royalist commanders: Prince MAURICE. Letter signed to Charles I, Dartmouth, 7 November 1643, reporting the capture of a Dunkirk frigate bound for Ireland with arms for the rebellion, suggesting these may prove useful for the King's service, 'being in very much want of all especially the powder', one page, folio ; William CAVENDISH, Duke of NEWCASTLE. Autograph letter signed to Prince Rupert Durham, 29 March 1644, warning him of Fairfax's advance into Yorkshire, 'which will much disturbe his Ma[jes]ties affairs heer. Could your Highness march this waye Itt would I hope putt a final Ende to our troubles', one page, folio ; John, Baron BELASYSE. Autograph letter signed to Prince Rupert York, 29 March 1644, protesting at Newcastle's order to march with all his forces from Yorkshire to Durham, 'which I must obey though it expose Yorksh: to so certaine a ruine', and resigning his command (as Lt-General of the King's forces in Yorkshire) as a consequence, two pages, folio (losses affecting 2 words, parts of inner margin concealed by mount); Thomas GLENHAM. Autograph letter signed to Prince Rupert York, 4 June 1644, informing him of the approach of the Parliamentary army to York and their demand to surrender York in six hours 'or else I must expect all extremities of warr' and asking for relief, one page, folio ; Lord George DIGBY. Letter signed with autograph postscript to Richard Brown 'both Partyes, I thinke, have found the inconveniences of being active in a winter Warre', discussing the Royalists' position, 3 pages, folio ; and autograph letter signed to Prince Rupert Oxford, 29 April 1645, mostly in a numerical cypher, a military report, referring to 'the late ill Accidents here by Cromwells Incursion on Our Quarters', 3 pages, folio .
