HUNTINGTON, Samuel (1731-1896), Signer (Connecticut), President of the Continental Congress. Autograph document signed ("Sam l Huntington"), n.p. Hartford [Conn.], 9 May 1777. 1 page, oblong (5½ x 8 1/8 in.), verso endorsed "Order to Colony Treasurer." Huntington and another official direct "John Lawrence Esq., Treasurer of the State of Connecticut...to pay out of the Treasury to Prosper Wetmore...Sheriff of New London County" [£4] lawful money for his attending the Election in May 1777 & distributing Laws and Proclamations the Year past...." In October 1775 Huntington was elected one of his state's delegates to the Continental Congress. At the same time he served as a justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court and a member of the Governor's Council. He held the post of President of the Congress from 1779 to 1781.
