Huygens, C. Systema Saturnium, sive de causis mirandorum Saturni phaenomenon, et comite ejus planeta novo. Den Haag, A. Vlacq, 1659. 4to (20:15,5 cm). Mit 1 gefalt. Kupfertaf., 11 Textkupf. u. 8 Holzschn.-Fig. im Text. 6 Bll., 84 S. Schöner moderner Lederband im Stil d. Zt., Schuber. PMM 154 Anm.; Dibner 9; Norman 1136; Sparrow 110; Bierens de Haan 2210; DSB VI, 604 u. 612. - Erste Ausgabe der kleinen Schrift, deren Bedeutung für die Astronomie unseres Planetensystems Galileis 'Sidereus nuncius' vergleichbar ist. "Although Galileo had observed the peculiar shape of the planet Saturn, it was the advanced telescope construction and observation of Huygens that led to a correct analysis of its changes. In it (Systema Saturnium, 1659) the rings and satellites of Saturn were described, also the explanation of their appearance and disappearance, and a micrometer used in making the observations" (Dibner). "The work also contains many other observations on the planets and their satellites, all contributing to a strong defense of the Copernican system." (Norman). - Stellenweise etwas fleckig, einige kleinere Restaurierungen im Rand. Titel auch etwas fingerfleckig u. oben mit altem, teils gelöschtem (Papier restauriert) Besitzvermerk von 1834, S. 35 an oberer weißer Ecke ergänzt und mittig mit restauriertem Einriss, Textkupfer auf S. 60 links gering ins Bild geschnitten.Tafel zu S. 34/35 mit kleiner Restaurierung im Bildrand. - Provenienz: Titel mit Tinteninitialen "J. W. Da(...) 1834"; Exlibris Hans Ludendorff; Dr. E. Hauswedell (Hamburg) Auktion 185, Kat.-Nr. 1384 (1972). First edition of the first full announcement of his discovery of the ring and satellites of Saturn. - Illustrated with 1 engr. folding plate, 11 engravings and 8 woodcut diagrams in the text. - Slightly stained in places, few minor restorations, faint fingermarking to title, title with old partly erased ink initials and date, white corner to p. 35 supplied and same page with horizontal restored tear, engraving on p. 60 cropped at left side, one plate with small marginal restoration affecting image. Bound in recent calf to style with title piece to spine, slip-case. - For provenance see above.
