Still life with a bouquet of dahlias (georginer) in a Greek vase. Signed I. L. Jensen. Oil on canvas. 89×73. Damborg frame with label. At the Academy, I. L. Jensen studied under C. W. Eckersberg and the flower painter C. D. Fritzsch. In 1821 he decided to devote himself to the flower painting and went to Paris to study flower paintings under the two Flemish brothers Gérard and Cornelis van Spaendonck After returning to Denmark he was employed at the Royal Danish Porcelain Factory, where he among other things decorated porcelain plates and large ornamental vases for the Royal Family. I. L. Jensen became Denmark's leading flower painter, and he had a large crowd of especially female students. His production ranges from flower pieces, to fruit pieces, or a mixture of both, to flower pots, to wildflowers and simple flower studies. Both wild and cultivated flowers he painted as close to reality as possible. The present painting shows with all it's strength his ability as a painter of flowers. In a large Greek vase he painted a sumptuous bouquet of dahlias in different colours.
