ILLUMINATED FOLIATE INITIALS, on two leaves from a Breviary, illuminated manuscript on vellum [Ferrara, circa 1465], each leaf 135 x 101mm, two columns of 29 lines written in brown ink in a round gothic bookhand between 4 verticals and 30 horizontals rules in plummet, justification 90 x 60mm, rubrics in red, one-line initials alternating red or blue, each leaf with one large illuminated initial with a dark pink stave with white tracery on a burnished gold ground with blue and green foliate infill, with accompanying foliate sprays in blue, green and pink with penwork decoration encompassing burnished gold disks. Laid down on card, framed and glazed. The colours, forms and penwork of the initials are characteristic of manuscripts of the highest quality produced for the churches and the d'Este court in Ferrara. with 'VIRTUES', illuminated metal-cut from a Book of Hours printed on vellum: Germain and Gilles Hardouin, Paris c.1505 and later, four female allegorical figures stand in the foreground, accompanied by an angel and beneath the Trinity, above four lines of verse on the Annunciation in French, all contained within an architectural frame of liquid gold, the socle carrying a monogram with the initials S.A.L. joined with a lovers' knot. In a gilt frame. (3)
