Manuscript document on vellum, being the appointment of Nicolo Schiadini as Ambassador for Corfu, Venice, July 20, 1699. 16 folios. 4to (223 x 165 mm). Scribal cursive hand in black and gold ink throughout, each page in black and gilt fillet borders, fol. 1r with large illuminated heading depicting the winged Lion of San Marco holding the ducal arms in a coastal setting with floriated borders over three heraldic devices of the Holy League, large decorative gilt devices throughout. Modern full tan crushed morocco gilt extra, with elaborate gilt dentelles, in custom half claret morocco slipcase, by Riviere. Final leaf blank, a few small spots, else fine. This attractive diplomatic appointment is signed several times by the ducal secretary Juanne [?] Marchesini, and the calligraphy is ascribed by prior owner Mortimer L. Schiff to Rosati. Venice had retained control of Corfu after the Treaty of Karlowitz earlier in the year, in addition to gaining the Morea, but elsewhere the Aegean fell under Turkish control.
