An illuminated arched miniature depicting the Annunciation to the shepherds.
France: 15th century]. Vellum leaf (170 x 130 mm), with a miniature of two men and a woman in a rural landscape with sheep grazing on a hill in the background, a lamb on the woman's lap and a sleeping dog lying at her feet, in the sky an angel with a banner announcing "Puer natus est nobis", within a burnished gold border, with three lines of text beneath, one large and two small initials, surrounded on three sides by foliate decoration in black, green, red, blue and gold; 17 lines of text on the verso with 8 initials and three line fillers in colors and gold. Framed. Condition : slight surface loss to gilding, two areas with pigments slightly smeared. A leaf from a French Book of Hours with the scene of the Annunciation to the Shepherds.
