GOLDEN GEMS OF PENMANSHIP AND SELF INSTRUCTOR. Pittsfield, Mass.: Knowles and Maxim, 1884. First Edition. 11 1/2 by 9 inches oblong in gilt and black stamped green cloth with a gilt printed cloth medallion onlay to the upper cover. With 39 full page calligraphic illustrations including 7 in red and green with gold highlighting. with: Bickham, George (Senior). THE UNITED PEN-MEN FOR FORMING THE MAN OF BUSINESS: OR, THE YOUNG-MAN'S COPY BOOK; CONTAINING VARIOUS EXAMPLES NECESSARY IN TRADE AND MERCHANDIZE VIZ. I. Bills of parcels. II. Book debts. III. Tradesmen bills. IV. Promissory notes. V. Bankers notes. VI. A bill of debt. VII. Acquittances and receipts. VIII. Bills of exchange. IX. A bill and a receipt. X. Bills of entry. XI. Letters of business. XII. Letters of credit. XIII. A letter of D0 and a receipt. XIV. A general letter of credit. XV. An invoice of French wines. XVI. An invoice of bale goods. XVII. An account of sales. XVIII. An account current. XIX. A bill of lading. XX. A commission &c. all which are exemplified in a legible, expeditious, and free running-hand fit for the Merchants Counting-House, trade and the publick offices. Written by several eminent masters, and engravd by George Bickham Senior. The whole, consisting of 40 folio copper-plates, extracted from that elaborate and beautiful work intitled the Universal penman. London: Printed for Henry Overton at the White Horse without Newgate, 1743. 13 1/2 by 9 1/4 inches in a later (19th C. ?) speckled boards and 1/2 leather. Engraved frontis plus 39 folio engraved plates, several with pictorial vignettes, headpieces, etc. A rare book with no example currently for sale on the standard sites; and only one auction record over the past twenty years. See Ekstrom, pp. 78 - 81; Bonacini, p. 208; Heal, p. 171 #7; Wiles, p. 288. Condition: Golden Gems with modest rubbing and wear to the covers; early owner's name in ink on the front free endpage; hinges cracked; contents clean and complete. The United Pen-men with corners rubbed raw; leather spine restored; copper-plate engraved plates fresh and in Very Good condition.
