oil on canvas, signed lower right, titled on verso. A classic Colonial Revival painting, almost certainly depicting Betsy Ross sewing the first American flag. In a black-painted frame; 39.75 x 29.75" (without frame), 43 x 33" (with frame). Adelaide Hiebel (1886-1968) was a Wisconsin artist most well-known for her illustration work, particularly that which featured women and children. According to the story told in 1870, William Canby (grandson of Betsy Ross), General Washington visited Ross' house in June of 1776 and commissioned the creation of a flag, which was later adopted as the official American flag. The story has since been scrutinized by historians and been determined to be a myth, one that was greatly promoted during the resurgence of patriotism following the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876, now referred to as the Colonial Revival. Condition: One repair, needs cleaned, craquelure.
