[a complete but mixed set], woodcut decorative title by Selwyn Image plates and illustrations, woodcut decorations and initials by Mackmurdo and Herbert P.Horne, the suppressed issue no.1, vol.4 (no.13-16), vol.7 (no.25-28) and 'The Hobby Horse' no.1-3 all in original pictorial wrappers, uncut, all but 'The Hobby Horse' with woodcut title design by Selwyn Image on upper covers and the Guild's monogram by Mackmurdo on lower, a little rubbed and soiled (especially suppressed issue), a few spines frayed, 'The Hobby Horse' with different design on upper covers (?by Horne) and in very good condition, preserved in old cloth drop-back boards, vol.1-3, 5 & 6 in original vellum-backed blue boards with small woodcut illustration on boards (part of Selwyn Image's design on upper, monogram on lower), uncut, a little rubbed, spines of vol.1-3 soiled, 4to, Orpington, April 1884 and London, (vol.3-7 Chiswick Press), 1886-94. *** Highly important magazine produced by one of the most important 19th century Arts and Crafts organisations. Rarely found complete with the suppressed issue. The Century Guild was founded in 1882 by the architect Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo to produce decorative work in every field of interior design including architecture, decorative painting, furniture, metalwork, ceramics and glass. There was an emphasis on crafts rather than mechanical production and in particular the new style of Art Nouveau, evident in the woodcut decorations and monogram by Mackmurdo (similar to his famous title page for Wrens City Churches (see previous lot). The architect Herbert P.Horne and artist & writer Selwyn Image were the fellow members and co-editors but many other artists were involved with the group. In 1884 they also started The Century Guild Hobby Horse, concentrating on the visual arts but also including literature and social issues. The first issue was published in April 1884 but no others until 1886 when they started again with No.1, and in 1893 it was renamed The Hobby Horse but only lasted for three isssues until 1894. It was a high quality magazine printed on handmade paper, illustrated with woodcuts and lithographs and used photogravure for reproductions, while the progressive typography and design of the main part was done or guided by Emery Walker and printed at the Chiswick Press. Contributors include Burne-Jones, William and May Morris Ruskin, Oscar Wilde, Simeon Solomon Laurence Binyon, Lionel Johnson and Wilfrid Scawen Blunt. The Guild influenced C.F.A.Voysey and Charles Rennie Mackintosh and other members of the Arts and Crafts movement; The Hobby Horse developed book-design leading to magazines such as The Yellow Book and The Savoy.
