Malgré un islam implanté très tôt dans la région, elles ont longtemps conservé leurs coutumes et leurs masques. Le Ntomo se chargeait de l'éducation des jeunes hommes jusqu'à l'âge de 13 ans au moment des cérémonies de circoncision. Il s'agit de la plus connue des sociétés initiatiques Bamana et la beauté de ses masques lui confère une notoriété toute particulière dans le monde des arts africains traditionnels. Ce masque du Ntomo se distingue par une grande élégance formelle alliée à une finition remarquable perceptible dans le travail des incisions qui soulignent ou renforcent les traits de ce véritable portrait. De chaque côté du visage très allongé, dans le style classique Bamana, le bord supérieur de la coiffe file depuis le haut de la crête médiane pour rejoindre les oreilles en un zig-zag harmonieux.
