Bryant, Roberta, Tennessee, janvier 1933 Pierre Matisse, New York, acquis en 1934-1935 Carl et Agnès Harrison, après 1936 Par descendance aux propriétaire actuel Carl et Agnès Harrison (belle-sœur de Pierre Matisse) ont reçu ce masque en cadeau ou l’ont acheté auprès de ce dernier, et il est ensuite resté dans la famille. Matisse avait envoyé à ce sujet en avril 1941 une lettre à son beau-frère Carl Harrison, dans laquelle il lui suggérait qu’ils pouvaient apporter le masque à son ami Georges Vaillant, conservateur associé au Musée Américain d’Histoire Naturelle de New York pour avoir son avis sur une attribution précise. En Effet, Matisse remettait en question l'attribution faite par Bryant,le propriétaire précédent, comme étant un masque Toltèque. Carl and Agnes Harrison (the latter Pierre Matisse’s sister-in-law) either were gifted or purchased from the above after 1936 and thence by descent Matisse authored a letter to his brother-in-law, Carl Harrison in April, 1941 where he suggests that they bring the Teotihuacan mask to the American Museum of Natural History in New York to have his friend, George Vaillant, the associate curator, elucidate on its cultural attribution as Matisse disagreed with Bryant, the original owner, who labeled the mask as Toltec.
