Blade decorated with etched martial themes, panoplies and trophies of arms, and flowing foliate sprays with a large US as the central panel on the reverse and E. PLURIBUS UNUM in a ribbon over a {Spread-Winged Eagle} as the central panel on the obverse. Brass mounted leather scabbard of the foot officer's pattern with German silver shield shaped escutcheon plate on face of throat that is engraved: 1863 / Lieut. G. Doubleday / from / Capt. Wilson's Comp. / 124. Rgt. George Doubleday (1830-1915) enlisted in the 124th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment on July 26, 1862 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in Company A of that regiment on September 12, 1862. He resigned on June 13, 1863. Company A was commanded by Captain William Wilson who enlisted in the regiment on July 24 of 1862 and was commissioned the captain of company A on September 12, 1862. Captain Wilson was mustered out of service on February 18, 1865. Condition: Very good. Blade mostly bright with strong etching and scattered surface oxidation. Brass cleaned to a brilliant golden color with traces of old cleaning compound in the cast decorations. Missing throat washer. Grip fine with tight wire. Blade to hilt junction is tight, with the guard somewhat loose. Peen is undisturbed. Scabbard about very good as well, with the leather showing wear and the mounts cleaned in a fashion similar to the sword. Leather with moderate wear, finish loss, scuffing and some crazing, but solid and with a tight seam up the back.
