CARTOGRAPHY - HATTINGA, David Willem Coutry. Oost-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen en aangrenzend Vlaanderen, 1778. Manuscript map by Hattinga, copy of a map from 1574, with autograph 'Caerte en Discriptie, signed 'DWC Hattinga Gesien: Landmeeter, Hulst den 1ste Meij 1778', hand-coloured, with fine drawings of villages, mills and a compass rose. Folded five times. To be restored, the centre fold is seriously damaged, margins sl. torn. Dimensions: 118 x 160 cm. Artist or Maker: HATTINGA, David Willem Coutry. Provenance: Private collection; The archives of the majordomo of the Belgian ducal family Arenberg from 1890-1916 Notes: Due to the numerous and extensive military inundations during the Eighty Years' War, the geography of this area has been substantially changed. A very impressive unique document.
