“In Defense of Christian Science”: Argument… before the Judiciary Committee of the Massachusetts Legislature, against a Bill...To Regulate the Practice of Medicine... Author: Stearns, George M. Place: Boston Publisher: Date: February 5, 1889 Description: 40pp. Original wrappers. Typed note affixed to front cover: “In defense of Christian Science.” Rare. WorldCat locates only three copies in American institutions. Perturbed by the burgeoning popularity of Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy’s Christian Science beliefs after publication of her classic “Science and Health”, a bill was introduced in the state legislature, at the instance of traditional physicians who denounced “untutored professional curers of all descriptions” including “Christian Science cranks”, prohibiting such alleged “quacks” from practicing medicine. Stearns, a state legislator, reportedly believing that his wife had been cured by Christian Scientists of an “incurable” disease “after the regulars had given her up”, appeared before a legislative committee proudly to defend the so-called “quacks” , declaring“ I believe fully in the right and expediency of permitting the Christian Scientists to practice their healing art…. if they are helpful to any living being, God forbid I should take this help away…God forbid that in the Commonwealth of Massachuetts we shall live to see…. Mrs. Eddy and… other ladies, dragged to jail under this bill, and with fetterrs on their limbs… carried to prison for teaching the People that God is health…and sickness a sin …” Lot Amendments Condition: Very good.
