RUSSIAN, 16TH CENTURY
"IN THEE REJOICETH" RUSSIAN, 16TH CENTURY The shown subject deriving from a hymn attributed to St. John of Damascus and not an actual event, representing in a circular glory the Mother of God enthroned holding the Christ Child, the latter extending both his hands in blessing, surrounded by angels, against a Church and the Garden of Paradise framed by scrolls on its red periphery, the above taking place on the summit of a green hill, two groups of saints depicted in the lower part, St. John Damaskenos prominently portrayed near the throne of the Mother of God, displaying his open scroll, the composition painted in detail, mostly with tones of green and red, the wings of the angels accentuated with gold highlights, the haloes coloured orange 11¾ x 9 3/8 in. (29.9 x 23.8 cm)
