An incredible collection of WWII Second World War effects relating to a W. L. Woodshaw (Dan Harrigan Woodshaw - born in Bishopston, Bristol) of the Gloster Regiment / Gloucestershire Regiment. The collection most notably containing a remarkable photograph album filled with images from Woodshaw's time as a POW Prisoner Of War in Poland. Captured at Dunkirk in 1940, Woodshaw was sent to Stalag XXA in Poland. The album, which is well filled, contains hundreds of unique images of Woodshaw and his fellow inmates during their time as POW's - many neatly annotated - including: 'Xmas 1941', views of them tobogganing, several shows / plays that were put on as entertainment including The Mikado, a Free French Concert Party, 'Concert Party At Kunigswartha Hospital 1942', Macbeth, etc. Along with several photographs from a POW funeral titled ' Some Corner Of A Foreign Field - Forever England ' which shows a deceased POW being buried with full military honours, later images showing views of a football match ' French Vs English ', some official real photographic postcards, and other general photographs from his time in service during the war. Along with the album is Woodshaw's War Medal and 1939-45 Star medals (both with ribbons), his ' Regular Army Certificate Of Service ' (listing him as 5183460 Dan Harrigan Woodshaw), and an incorrect French Death Certificate ' Dossier De Succession Militaire Tue '. Personal effects relating to Woodshaw's marriage to a nurse after the war are also included - comprising of her watch, Southmead Hospital badge, wedding photograph and a newspaper cutting. Consigned from the family, Woodshaw's Son goes on to explain: Dan Harrigan Woodshaw (1915 - 1973) was born in Bishopston, Bristol, and joined the Gloucestershire Regiment in 1936. (His Regular Army Certificate of Service is included in the sale.) In 1940 he was taken prisoner at Dunkirk and transferred to Stalag XXA in Poland. During his ordeal as a POW he took (and/or obtained) several photographs, which he mounted in an album on his return to the UK. Most of these document life at Stalag XXA, and include images of a production of The Mikado (Christmas 1941), a hospital concert party, and a funeral for a POW who died in internment. The album also contains photos from the North African Front, which Dan presumably obtained from a fellow prisoner. Due to ill health, Dan was released from Stalag XXA and sent back to the UK, in all likelihood so that his health care would be a drain on British, rather than German, resources. However, before he could be repatriated, a death certificate (Dossier de Succession Militaire Tue) was mistakenly issued for him in France and sent to his mother in Bristol. She refused to believe that he had been killed – rightly so, as it turned out. On his return to Bristol, he was admitted to Southmead Hospital, where he met a student nurse, called Ellen Paskell (1921 - 2019). The couple married in 1946, and Ellen’s nursing badge, watch and SRN certificate are included in the sale. A fascinating, poignant and unique piece of WWII history, of local interest. Consigned from the family.
