INCUNABLE LEAVES]. Joannes BALBUS. Catholicon . Mainz: [Catholicon printer, i.e. Johann Gutenberg], 1460 [second impression: 1469]. Royal 2 o (364 x 286 mm). Single leaf (Astruco--Aucupabilis). Type 1:82G, Double column, 66 lines. Rubricated in red, lombard heading capitals and paragraph marks. Loosely inserted in a copy of: Margaret Bingham STILLWELL. Gutenberg and the Catholicon of 1460... together with an original leaf . New York: Brick Row Book Shop, 1936. Original blue printed wrappers (small tear to head of backstrip). A leaf from the second impression of the Mainz Catholicon, printed ca. 1469, possibly from two-line castings preserved from the original impression of 1460. Three distinct impressions of the Catholicon have been identified. The present leaf contains the Galliziani watermark (the family emblem of the Galliziani brothers, papermakers of Basel) indicative of the second impression.
