INGRES, Jean-Auguste-Dominique (1780-1867). Autograph letter to Raymond Balze "Meung sur Loire," 16 August [1858?]. 2 pages, 8vo, neat repairs to folds, otherwise fine. On the last leaf is another ALS ("J. Ingres") to "Paul," same place and date. 1¼ pages. With front of original envelope addressed by Ingres. Two letters from one of the leading classicist painters of the 19th century to two fellow painters and disciples. Ingres thanks Paul for his devotion and encourages him in his work, "convinced you have done everything with heart and talent." He refers to a painting of Homer (probably his Apotheosis of Homer ). To the painter Balze he writes with equal warmth and appreciation, sorry that he could not help to put the finishing touches on a work but "shall see it hanging," and adds "friendly greetings to Dumay and ask him to put the last touches on our work..." -- BALZE, Raymond. ANS ("R. Balze") [draft letter to Ingres?], n.p., n.d. 1 page, 8vo, in pencil. Responding to an inquiry on "La Stronice," its price and ownership, "purchased by the Duc d'Aumale for 93000 francs," and now at Chantilly, "where it is the pearl." (2)
