A BID FOR GENOESE SUPPORT IN THE CONQUEST OF SICILY. The bull recognises the 'great merits and famous services' of Genoa towards the Apostolic See, and, specifically 'after the entirety of the peoples of Sicily have been incorporated in the grace of the Apostolic See by treaty or by other means', grants a confirmation of all their 'approved ancient customs and liberties and immunities with all your possessions and laws'; if anyone should attempt to infringe them, 'he will incur the wrath of almighty God and of Saints Peter and Paul'. The attempt by Innocent IV to incorporate Sicily into the Papal States was a response to the death of his arch-enemy, the Hohenstaufen Emperor and King of Sicily Frederick II. In spite of the terms of the present bull, Innocent ultimately lacked the economical and political power to annex Sicily in the face of Frederick's son, Conrad IV, although he did make a meaningless grant of the title of King of Sicily to Edmund Crouchback, the 9-year old son of Henry III of England.
