IRISH SCHOOL (CIRCA 1808) Portrait miniature of Lady Elizabeth Bligh, circa 1808, head and shoulders, wearing a coral necklace With original inscription set into the lid of the case with sitter's details, Lady/ Elizabeth Bligh/ b. May 7th 1800/ m. Rev. J. Brownlow/ July 10th 1833/ d.Nov 13th/ 1872 Watercolour on ivory Set into a gilt-metal circular locket case with engine turned design with hand written inscription in pen and ink set into the lid Circular, 34mm diam. Elizabeth Brownlow née Bligh (7th May 1800 – 13th November 1872) was the daughter of John Bligh, Fourth Earl of Darnley (1767-1831). He was an Irish peer and cricketer. He appeared in at least twenty-seven first-class cricket matches between 1789 and 1796. Together with his brother, the Honourable Edward Bligh, they were referred to as the first Irish first-class cricketers. In 1833, Elizabeth married her first cousin, the Very Rev John Brownlow, who was the Vicar at Ardbraccan, County Meath and held the office of Dean of Clonmacnoise from 1862 until his death in 1882.
