WEIZMANN FROM THE SIEFF INSTITUTE IN IT'S INAUGURAL YEAR. Chaim Weizmann, leader of the Zionist movement and integral player in the creation of Israel, was also a distinguished scientist. In 1934, shortly after he left his position as President of the World Zionist Organization, Weizmann founded the Daniel Sieff Research Institute in Rehovoth to promote the international study of science. Weizmann once stated: "The Institute is the fulfillment of a vision and the translation of a dream into reality. It can achieve much for the good of Israel and ... when peace comes to the Middle East ... for the good of our neighbors and the good of mankind." (Rochester-Rehovot Sister City Homepage). In the year that the Institute opened its doors, Weizmann writes to Professor Shamrock, who had recently paid a visit: "I thank you very much for your letter dated the 24th of July. And I thank you for your willingness to send us the pictures, which we are very happy to receive. I apologize sincerely that I was not present when Your Honor visited the institution. I hope you will come again at your first opportunity."
