J.T. H[URFORD] John Lawrence's Handbook of Cricket in Ireland Dublin: John Lawrence [1866-81]. 15 vols., 8vo. (occasional spotting, short marginal tear to title of 1871, title to 1872 browned, 1873 lacking title), first number in yellow boards, no. 9 in original green cloth, the remainder in original paper-covered boards or original wrappers, reprising the figure of a batsman (board and paper bindings rebacked with facsimile lettering on spines, a few covers soiled or stained, 1873 lacking front wrapper), in three protective cloth boxes. Provenance : J.W. Rimington-Wilson (ownership signature on title of no. 6) -- NO. 9 A PRESENTATION COPY (inscribed to A.J.N. Neile "with the compiler's compts --May 1874" on front blank; also with bookplate of Anthony Woodhouse) -- M.C.C. (stamp on front pastedowns, nos. 12 and 13). A COMPLETE RUN OF THE ONLY IRISH CRICKET ANNUAL. Although Padwick appears to call for 16 editions, no. 15 was never published, and the final "sixteenth" issue covers two seasons. The copy of the 16th no. in the M.C.C. library is inscribed by A.D. Taylor: "This is called the Sixteenth number but is really the Fifteenth (which was never issued). See Preface and also p.1". In the preface Hurford states: "Once again in submitting the Handbook for your generous support, I feel that the exceptionally depressed state of trade ... will be a sufficient excuse for my hesitation to produce the book last year", and on p. 1 he adds: "To very exceptional circumstances, and to these alone, must we refer as the causes of the non-appearance of our Handbook last year". Padwick 3315. (15)
