JACOB, Max (1876-1944). A collection of 59 autograph personal memoranda on religious themes, many based on specific verses from the Bible, one including a PEN AND INK SKETCH PORTRAIT, n.p. [St.-Benoît-sur-Loire], n.d. [circa 1942] , in which the writer ponders on various Biblical texts, on the Last Judgement, the virtues, Hell, sins, etc., circa 114 pages, 4to , (rather browned, a few minor tears occasionally affecting text). Jacob, a poet and artist, was a precursor of the Dadaist movement in literature, and the author of various mystical works. Born into the Jewish faith, he became a Christian in 1915 with Pablo Picasso standing as his godfather. His profound faith and disillusionment with the world compelled him to move in 1921 to St.-Benoît, where he lived in seclusion, but in constant contact with his friends, including Picasso and Jean Cocteau These memoranda are written for himself and for others to read. On the leaf with the portrait the text starts 'Les pèches 4h ¼' he reflects on sin and its consequences, 'Si vous dis que nous sommes indelicats Vous desolez Dieu! vous chagrinez Dieu ... In another meditation he reflects at 7 o'clock on hell, and at 7.10 on Paradise, 'Mourir n'est pas mourir, c'est vivre ... Je desire le Paradis. C'est par ce désir que je suis venu ici en 1936 renoncant aux flèches mondains'. On 24 February 1944 Jacob was arrested, and on 28th was transferred to the concentration camp at Drancy where he died on 5th March.
