JACOBSZ LOOTSMAN, Theunis (1606/7-1650), Jacob (d.1679) and Caspar (d.1711). Le Grand & Nouveau Miroir ou Flambeau de la Mer . Translated from Flemish into French by Paul Yvounet. Amsterdam: Jacob & Casper Jacobsz Lootsman, 1669. A rare maritime atlas and pilot guide, from the noble French library of the comte de Mailly, who rose through army ranks to become marshal of France in 1783 and was beheaded in the revolution. Lootsman succeeded Blaeu and Colom in importance and his maps were reprinted or copied by Goos, Janssonius and Doncker. Lootsman ‘set the example for the classical type of the Zeespiegel in folio format’ (Koeman). Extra-illustrated with three maps of the Caribbean which had previously appeared in Lootsman’s Zee-Atlas of 1666 (Koeman IV, Jac 1, maps 23, 26, 27) and which his advertisement of 1679 makes clear were available separately. On the death of Theunis Jacobsz in 1650, his heirs sold the plates for the Zeespiegel to Goos; subsequent editions beginning in 1662 are printed with new maps, similar but different. Koeman does not record a 1669 edition, but it agrees with his description of the 1671 edition, including the almanac for 1670-77 and all catchwords, mis-signings and mis-paginations. Koeman IV, Jac 36 (1671 ed.). Folio (450 x 280mm). Engraved title with letterpress text, 34 double-page engraved maps, 2 woodcut maps in text, and 3 additional double-page maps of the Caribbean from Lootsman’s Zee-Atlas , woodcut (one engraved) text illustrations and diagrams, partial woodcut from another work pasted below colophon (volvelles missing from two diagrams, some spotting and browning, two maps with small repair, title repaired at extreme corners, occasional light dampstain). Contemporary vellum, Mailly-Haucourt coat-of-arms [Olivier 2044, this version not illustrated] gilt on red morocco medallion mounted at centre of both sides (new endpapers, missing two ties, discreet spine repairs). Provenance : Joseph-Augustin de Mailly, comte de Mailly, marquis d’Haucourt, baron de Saint-Amand (1708-1794).
