Jupiter and Callisto Canvas. 26.5 x 36.5 cm The theme of Jupiter and Callisto is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book II). Callisto, Diana's favourite nymph goddess of hunting, therefore has a duty of chastity. Jupiter to seduce her takes on the appearance of Diana, but a few months later Callisto pregnant will be chased by her mistress' dogs. Jupiter to save her will turn her into a star. The moment chosen here is the one where Jupiter transformed into Diana seduces Callisto. Amigoni painted several paintings of the same subject, with very similar compositions: - One is kept at the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg (62 x 76 cm). - Another version formerly at Colnaghi was sold at Sotheby's, London, on November 28, 1962 (No. 168). - The version closest to ours (37 x 47.5 cm) formerly kept in the Mauro Herlizka collection in Buenos Aires (see A. Scarpa Sonino, Jacopo Amigoni Soncino, 1994, No. 19, reproduced), has been 40. He took over a sale at Christie's, New York, on April 6, 2006 (No. 90, reproduced). In these four paintings, Amigoni is similar to the French painting influenced by Lemoyne and Watteau.
