In 1856, he moved to Belgium, where he became one of the best landscape painters of his era, with his work being rewarded on several occasions. Carabain showed a preference for the picturesque, of which the lively scene we are presenting is a good example. Rapidly painting the life of a village, Carabain uses the verticality of the houses and pier to create a beautiful view. The mountain and the sea in the background open the scene, which gives the composition its full depth. Carabain also plays with shadow and light, as he adorns many figures with red and white.
