JAMNITZER, Wenzel (1508-85). Perspectiva corporum regularium. Das ist ein fleyssige Fërweysung . [Nuremberg: n.p.], 1568. 2° (420 x 280mm). Engraved title and 49 plates by Jost Amman (Title remargined with minor rubbing affecting engraving, occasional marginal browning, spotting and light waterstaining only affecting a few plates, plates numbered in red pencil in top right corner.) Contemporary vellum, leather label on spine (some staining and chipping to extremities, book label removed from spine). Provenance : erased label and date '1906'. FIRST EDITION OF THIS MAGNIFICENT BOOK ON PERSPECTIVE. Jamnitzer was the best known German goldsmith of his era and worked for a succession of Emperors, including Charles V, Ferdinand I, Maximilian II, and Rudolf II. He is thought to have invented an embossing machine and he performed scientific studies to improve the technical knowledge of his guild. Perspectiva Corporum Regularium , based on Plato's Timaeus and Euclid's Elements , is highly prized for its striking engravings of polyhedra. RARE: only 2 copies recorded at auction (AE/ABPC online).
