The closest to the present painting is probably one in the High Museum of Art in Atlanta (inv. 1989.113), now assigned to Brueghel the Elder, which is of comparable quality. The garland of flowers, absolutely identical to the one in the Atlanta painting, enables the painting to be dated to the 1620s. The refined, detailed treatment, typical of Brueghel the Elder, is indeed very similar: the petals, outlined with a fine, lighter brushstroke, their reflections created with glazes, convey a wonderfully delicate impression despite the profusion of colours and light effects. The still life’s vitality comes from the wide range of flower varieties depicted, their accurate , the alternation of their shapes – sometimes rounded, sometimes elongated – the shimmering colours and their carefully planned arrangement. The pictorial treatment of the garland of flowers seems however to indicate an attribution to Jan Brueghel the Younger, to whom in fact the Atlanta painting was until recently attributed. Jan Brueghel the Younger has here joined forces with the studio of Peter Paul Rubens, to whom he entrusted the painting of the central medallion. In the early seventeenth century, especially in Antwerp, still life artists regularly collaborated with another artist in the execution of religious or mythological scenes. Brueghel worked with Rubens or his studio: the two artists were very close – indeed in 1610 Rubens painted a portrait of Brueghel and his wife. The collaboration between these two masters was fruitful: in the Atlanta version, as in the one recently sold in New York (Sotheby’s New York, 30 January 2021, lot 595, sold for 94,500 USD), Brueghel handed over responsibility for painting the central figures to Rubens’ workshop.--------------------------------------------------------Plusieurs versions de cette composition sont connues à ce jour, présentant la Sainte Famille entourée de saint Jean et de sainte Anne dans un médaillon encadré d’une riche guirlande de fleurs, avec néanmoins des variantes notamment dans la couleur des drapés.
