Hortus/Corpus" Stefan Hertmans & Evert van Straeten, Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo 2011, cf. p. 129 reprod. Jan Fabre – Listen A lifelike Jan Fabre skittishly searches around. Adorned with two drinking glasses, as if they were feelers of an insect – or antennae? Or horns? – he scans his environment for emerging rumors. The title "Listening inside my own head" suggests that the artist is trying to discern his own thoughts. Two hands appear from the wall next to his head. The "Hand to listen" holds a glass and invites the viewer to listen to what is going on at the other side of the wall. The artist communicates with his audience in an absurdly realistic way, as protagonist of his own static theater. The installation is a game of hearing and being heard, of listening to what has been forgotten or ignored, to what is happening outside the walls, to the reality surrounding us. The questioning of fundamental and universal human qualities, which can also be found in the animal world, is a constant in Fabre’s oeuvre. For example, listening as a theme also returns in another work in this auction (lot 538), “Flemish Warrior (Warrior of Despair)”. In this case the warrior is a Flemish giant, the rabbit breed par excellence from our region. With his ears as a weapon, he can flee possible enemies in time. It is the nature of people, and by extension of artists, to be alert to evil tongues. Culture hounds are always lurking Jan Fabre was invited by Jan Hoet in 1992 to participate in Documenta IX in Kassel. The installation "Listen" was exhibited at three different locations simultaneously, consisting each of one copy of "Listening inside my own head" and seven copies of "Hand to listen". The various hands were scattered along the inside of the outer walls over the three locations on Documenta. “It is a story of hearing and listening. Jan's mother listened with such a glass to what her son was doing in his nursery. It is also a call, a symbol: listen to what is happening outside, outside the art world" writes Ralf Danke ("Ein Foto-Rundgang durch die Documenta IX. ‘Documenta as a Motor’ - Kommentare von Jan Hoet", published in Kunstforum # 119, 1992, p.274)
