JAN SAFARIK (1886–1914) Carnival in Paris Starting price: 240 000 CZK (8 727 EUR) Hammer price: 410 000 CZK (14 909 EUR) Description dimensions: 24,5 x 40 cm (h x w) period: After 1909, France (Paris) This work offered for auction is very special due to the number of this artist's works that have been preserved from his time in Paris and due to his later history. Having arrived to Paris after deserting the army in Bosnia, his star shone brightly on the Parisian art scene, though only briefly. After his successes at the Salon exhibitions in 1910, 1911, 1913 and 1914, he disappeared and nothing is known about his later work or life. Last year, his birth city of Prostějov organized an exhibition commemorating his mysterious disappearance. Oil on canvas, mounted on a mahogany panel. Signed on the left at the bottom: J.Šafařík.
