JAN STURSA (1880–1925) Gift of Heaven and Earth Starting price: 38 000 CZK (1 434 EUR) Hammer price: 38 000 CZK (1 434 EUR) Description dimensions: 36 cm (height) period: 1918, Bohemia This small statue is a variation of the large bronze statue that Štursa created after returning from the war in 1918. Several other versions and studies that Štursa worked on in 1917–18 exist; they were displayed at the Jan Štursa exhibition at the Mánes Union of Fine Artists in 1950. Considered an example of New Classicism in modern Czech sculpture, this statue is exceptional in the context of Štursa’s oeuvre for its form, which emphasizes the lyricism of the nude. Compared to his earlier work, one can observe a certain “etherealization” and lightness of the form, accenting its inner strength. Bronze, marble. Signed “Štursa” on the right and left sides of the plinth.
