JANIN, Jules (1804-74). L'Amour des livres. Paris: Bonaventure et Ducessois for J. Miard, 1st June 1866. 8 o (165 x 104 mm). Collation : \kp\K 2, 1-4 8. PRINTED ON VELLUM, one of four copies. Frontispiece-portrait by Léopold Flameng on paper. FINE CONTEMPORARY BINDING BY FRANCISQUE CUZIN, FINISHED BY LéON MAILLARD, signed by both on turn-ins: gold-tooled blue morocco, septuple fillet round sides, spine tooled and lettered in compartments, floral border on beige doublures, gilt edges. Provenance : Léon Rattier (bookplate, 1922 Paris sale, lot 2024) -- René Descamps-Scrive (bookplate, his 1935 sale, part II, lot 435) -- Maurice Escoffier (bookplate). Limited edition of 200 paper copies and FOUR COPIES ON VELLUM. Two autograph letters signed by Janin have been inserted in this copy (one loosely). Cuzin's doreur Maillard later went to America and did some of his best work for the Club Bindery (see Breslauer sale, First Portion, Christie's NY, 21 March 2005, lot 118). BBB Wittockiana 38.
