JAVA] [Court-Dancers and Court-Actors of Docjakarta (Java)] . [Surabaya: Soerabaische Kunstring, 1911]-the title, date and imprint above taken from the binding. First and only edition, presumably issued in an exceedingly small number. Full reverse calf, stamped with the title above, and with the dated seal of the Kunstring on the upper cover, in an intricately carved hinged wooden box (with lock and key), lined with velvet, designed for the publication, apparently of Javanese manufacture; paste paper endsheets. 14 5/8 x 18 inches (37 x 46 cm); 45 mounts bound on cloth guards, each with one photograph, most signed in pencil or ink (lr) by the photographer ("Adam"). The subject of each image is identified by a mounted printed strip with a typeset legend printed in gold. Minor silverfishing to the front endpapers, overall fine, and exceptionally rare. The Soerabaische Kunstring ("Surabaya Art Circle") was active for many years. This publication, from the cover seal, was produced under its aegis. With its printed captions it seems to have been formally published, albeit in a very limited manner. The photographs of dancers in the courts of Java are exquisite and sometimes surreal. We can find no record of this volume, elegant in its presentation, quality of photography and subject matter, in any of the major library catalogues worldwide (including the Koninklijke Bibliotheek).
