JEFFERSON, Thomas. Notes on the State of Virginia; with the Appendixes-Complete. To which is subjoined, A Sublime and Argumentative Dissertation on Mr. Jefferson's Religious Principles . Baltimore: W. Pechin, 1800. 8 o (210 x 130mm). Folding plate. Contemporary calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece (endpapers foxed, scattered spotting, loss of some strips on upper and lower covers). Provenance : Samuel Watkins, M.D. (bookplate). AN ELECTION YEAR EDITION OF JEFFERSON'S BOOK, the ninth edition, with an addendum defending him against the Federalist charges that he was an "infidel" and an enemy of religion: "Citizens of America! of all religious denominations, beware of interfering with the religion of any man considered a candidate for any office your suffrages can confer. You know not what consequences, such conduct, so contemptuous of our constitution, may tend." Political enemies made the most of Jefferson's Deism. But when he compiled his famous version of the Gospels in 1804, The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth , he half-jokingly told friends that it proved he was more truly Christian than the Christians since the so-called "Jefferson Bible" excised all miracles and supernatural feats, and retained only the moral and ethical teachings of Jesus--which Jefferson regarded as the most authentic expressions of the historical Jesus. Evans 37703; Howes J-78; Sabin 35900.
