JEFFERYS, Thomas. A Description of the Spanish Islands and Settlements on the Coast of the West Indies . London: Thomas Jefferys, 1762.
JEFFERYS, Thomas. A Description of the Spanish Islands and Settlements on the Coast of the West Indies . London: Thomas Jefferys, 1762. 4 o (242 x 200 mm). 32 engraved folding maps, the first colored by hand in outline (maps of Cuba and Hispaniola with short tears near gutter, some occasional pale spotting). Contemporary calf, spine gilt, later red morocco lettering piece (rebacked preserving original spine). FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT WEST INDIES HISTORY. Published at a critical time for colonial interests in the area, the work describes much of the Caribbean region with accompanying charts by Jefferys. At the time, hostilities between Britain, France and Spain had ceased, with Britain temporarily in possession of most of the French islands. In spite of vigorous lobbying from West Indian planters, the major islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique were returned to France as part of the trade-off by which France agreed to relinquish Canada. Cundall 2045; Palau 123372; Sabin 35959.
