JEFFERYS, Thomas (d.1771). A Description of the Spanish Islands and Settlements on the Coast of the West Indies . London: Thomas Jefferys, 1762. 4 o (245 x 202 mm). 32 engraved folding maps, the first colored by hand in outline. (Offsetting on title-page, free front endpaper parted, scattered foxing.) Contemporary calf (front hinge cracked, rubbed). FIRST EDITION of this important West Indies history. Published at a critical time for colonial interests in the area, the work describes much of the Caribbean region with accompanying charts by Jefferys. At the time, hostilities between Britain, France and Spain had ceased, with Britain temporarily in possession of most of the French islands. In spite of vigorous lobbying from West Indian planters, the major islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique were returned to France as part of the trade-off by which France agreed to relinquish Canada. Palau 123372; Sabin 35959.
