Together with an Historical Account of the Several Countries and Islands which Compose that Part of the World . London: Robert Sayer and John Bennett 1780 [letterpress title, engraved title dated 1775]. 2 o (523 x 368 mm). Letterpress title, dedication leaf and 14 leaves letterpress description of the plates. Double-page engraved title and 40 engraved maps. (Some occasional pale offsetting and light soiling, generally clean and crisp.) Laid loose in modern cloth folding case. A FINE COPY OF JEFFERYS'S IMPORTANT ATLAS OF THE WEST INDIES, a companion to Jefferys's American Atlas first published in 1775 (see lot 284). Jefferys died in 1771, after which Sayer and Bennett acquired his materials in preparation for these atlases. Twenty seven pages of text gives the sources for the maps and charts, and a historical account of the West Indies. The bulk of the atlas, and its most detailed section, comprises the sixteen sheet large chart and index sheet of the whole of the West Indies. The rest of the atlas consists of charts of the Atlantic Islands and the British Channel, as well as individual maps and charts of seventeen islands in the West Indies.
