Document signed (“Geo: Jeffreys”), adjudicating in favour of Thomas Cartwright regarding the inheritance of St Margaret´s Hill [Southwark] and several houses from his uncle, Samuel Cartwright, Citizen and Stationer of London, also signed by Joseph Lane, one page, small folio, guard, minor spotting, 27 June 1676 Documents or letters signed by the notorious Judge Jeffreys are uncommon, one only having come up for sale in the last twenty years. This document was issued when he was Common Serjeant of the City of London. He was to come to the notice of the future James II the following year. Samuel Cartwright, the stationer whose property is the subject of Jeffreys´s adjudication, is best known for a series of Mercator maps, printed from Hondius´ plates, which he published with Michael Sparke in 1635.
