JEWELLED BINDING.] La journée du Chrétien... Paris and Lyon: Librairie Catholique de Perisse frères, 1844. 8 o (104 x 68 mm). 17th century elaborately jewelled silver-gilt binding with central imperial double eagle below Jesus on the cross, set with numerous amethysts, turquoise, garnets and simulated sapphires, 2 jewelled clasps, gilt edges; Provenance : HOHENZOLLERN-SIGMARINGEN (The Hohenzollern collection from Sigmaringen was exhibited in the Stddel Museum in Frankfurt in 1928, and this binding is listed in the catalogue under number 1026); Frankfurt, Stadtbibliothek (ink stamp on verso of title); purchased from Emil Offenbacher 29 March, 1956. The binding covers a French prayer book, which was placed in the binding much later. A very similar binding from the collection of Alfred de Rothschild was sold at Christie's New York, 24 May 2002, lot 154.
