Washington: November 25th 1963. Special presentation wooden shadow box with a folded national Flag in the upper section, with an accompanying 1pp typed note on White House stationary, 8vo, dated December 18th 1963, stating "This is one of the flags which were flown over the White House during the thirty day period of mourning for the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. Garland Newland Engineer"; Together with a pair of grey gloves worn by Sargent Shriver at the funeral, with a typed label "Worn at President Kennedy's funeral by Mr Sargent Shriver Director of the Peace Corp. November 25th 1963." A fine presentation piece containing artifacts relating to the funeral of J F Kennedy. Robert Sargent Shriver Jr, had married Eunice Kennedy, JFK's sister, and under the Kennedy administration helped create the Peace Corps, a role he continued under the Johnson Administration. Shriver heard of JFK's death on the evening of the 22nd November, and hours later was asked by Jackie to arrange JFK's funeral on the 25th November. On the evening of the 22nd , he managed to arrange an honor guard and burning torches to be laid out to receive JFK's body back at the White House at 4.30am. He masterminded the complete operation, to inviting the Heads of State, arranging for Kennedy's body to be set in place at the Capitol, and the large processions on the day itself. He successfully organized, in 48 hours, the solemn and poignant events around the funeral of JFK. In the funeral procession Shriver walked behind Jackie and the Children.
