Jimmie Foxx 1925-28 H&B Rookie Era Side Written Professional Model Bat There was nothing quite like a Jimmie Foxx home run. Unlike a Babe Ruth homer that was majestic and almost serene, a Foxx homer was brute force. Such power generated from a 5-foot-11, 195-pound former Maryland farmboy, who emerged in 1925 as the strongman of Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics lineup and the first serious challenger to Ruth's power-hitting dominance. Foxx was a menacing figure when he stood at the plate with a fixed glare, waving the bat with biceps that bulged from sleeves cut deliberately short. From his breakthrough 1929 season with the A's through 1940, his fifth season with the Boston Red Sox, Foxx never failed to hit 30 homers or drive in 100 runs, a remarkable 12- year stretch. He also led the A's to three pennants and two World Series championships, won two batting titles, topped the 50-homer plateau twice and won a 1933 Triple Crown with his .356 average, 48 homers and 163 RBIs. Offered here is what must be considered amongst the finest Foxx game bats known to exist. It attributes include the fact that it was manufactured during the 1925-28 period, Foxx's earliest years in the major leagues. Manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby from the finest ash, the early Foxx professional model bat measures 35 inches, weighs 35.5 ounces and shows evidence of outstanding use with a handle crack that has been repaired with a nail. Many ball marks are visible on the left and back barrel. Ideal provenance is present in the form of faint side writing on the barrel. Clearly a favored weapon of "The Beast", this example was returned to H&B so that bats of the same model could be made. From the teens to the early 1940's, when players were in need of bats of the same model, it was commonplace for the player to send his preferred model back to the factory to request models of the same type. Upon receipt, an area on the barrel was planed and inscribed with the length and weight, player's name, date received, and team affiliation. The area that was side written upon the bats return is visible on the left barrel. Rookie era bats of Jimmie Foxx are extremely rare, with this specimen possessing nearly every ideal trait valued by connoisseurs of big league lumber. This sentiment is echoed throughout accompanying LOAs from leading third party bat authenticator David Bushing, who at the time of his writing, called it "The finest Jimmie Foxx game used bat extant.", and John Taube of PSA/DNA who gave the bat an overall graded of GU8.
