To the left, radiating lines represent a star, while a sickle shape suggests a sickle moon, or the passing of time. To the right, another standing cartoon figure looks on at the fallen companion, unable to help. Almost childlike, full of charm and avoiding all attempt at conventional representation, the drawing is characteristic of Joan Miró's art. He often depicted stars as simple radiating lines, and the sun and moon as circles; motifs that echo the freedom found in childrens' art. Everything is simplified, with fantasy and reality combining to express the artist's concepts. However, while appearing spontaneous, Miró's art was carefully thought out; he wanted to achieve a direct effect, using motifs that he felt could be understood by people from all cultures and all walks of life. Born in Barcelona, after moving to Paris in 1920, Miró mixed with writers, poets and artists, and became friendly with the Surrealists André Breton Paul Elouard, Max Ernst and André Masson He attended meetings and poetry readings, developing a fascination with art and literature, and in particular with what was termed, at that time, primitive art. He understood the power of the unexpected, and began to use unconventional materials in his paintings. The sharp, simple imagery in the poetry of Pierre Reverdy (1889-1960) is in many ways the literary equivalent of Miró's art. After moving to Paris in 1910, Reverdy had developed a form of poetry, short and fragmentary, has often been compared to the work of the Cubist painters. Editing the literary journal Nord-Sud, his work was published in collections such as the 1924 les épaves du ciel, bringing him fame, and praise from André Breton and other Surrealists. However in 1926 Reverdy withdrew from the art and literary world of Paris and lived the rest of his life as a semi-recluse near the Benedictine Abbey at Solesmes, near Le Mans. He was active in the Resistance during WWII. Along with Picasso, Braque, Gris and Leger, Miro was one of the artists featured the book a la rencontre de Pierre Reverdy, published by Galerie Maeght in 1970. Peter Murray, March 2021
