MAPS OF BOHEMIA AND MORAVIA
Description dimensions: 53 x 62 cm (h x w) period: Around 1750; Germany, Nuremberg Two separate maps. Colorized copper engravings. The two single-sheet maps were created by Johann Christoph Müller, the author of what is perhaps the most famous wall map of Bohemia, which is presented in 25 sections. This map is a period copperplate engraving with colorized areas and lines. The plate imprints are bold, clean and fresh; the colors are bright and, like the strong, relatively strong paper, exceptionally well preserved, with no oxidation. The sheets feature wide margins. MAP OF BOHEMIA: Title in an allegoric cartouche of hunting and harvesting in the upper right corner, topped with a Bohemian lion crest. Legend and length scale bottom left corner. List of individual regions in French at the top outside the frame. MAP OF MORAVIA: Title in a sweeping figurative allegoric cartouche with a Moravian eagle crest in the upper left corner. Symbols of rivers and vineyards in lower left corner. Legend of settlements in upper right corner.
