Johnson, Martin. Safari: A saga of the African Blue. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1928. 8vo, orange cloth with gilt front and spine, 294pp. Endpapers are photos of Africans under acacia tree. Johnson, Osa. I Married Adventure: The Lives and Adventures of Martin and Osa Johnson. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1940. 8vo, zebra-stiped cloth, endpapers with photo of herd of giraffes on the savannah, 376pp. First edition with "Manufactured in the United States of America by the Haddon Craftsman, Inc., Camden, N.J." on copyright page. Johnson, Osa. Four Years in Paradise. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1941. 8vo, giraffe-patterned cloth, 345pp. Signed "Best African wishes / Osa Johnson" on back of half-title, below list of her books. Endpapers with drawing of African bush scene including elephants and lions. Martin (1884-1937) and Osa (1894-1953) Johnson were adventurers and early documentary filmmakers. Their books and films captured the imagination of Americans in the first half of the 20th century. Their first adventures were in the South Pacific and North Borneo. In 1921 they began their first African safari. From 1924 to 1927 they spent much of their time in northern Kenya. A number of films were made from this footage, several after Martin's death. Their third expedition was with friend George Eastman and resulted in some of the first "talkies" of the Johnsons' adventures. It was their fourth trip, to the Belgian Congo, that saw them recording sound in Africa. They both learned to fly in 1932 and purchased two amphibious Sikorskies. They were the first to fly the length of Africa shooting scenes of herds of animals moving across the savannahs. Yet, it was in a commercial plane owned by Western Air Express, that Martin lost his life in a crash near Newhall, California. Osa recovered from her injuries sustained in the crash and continued to study the people and animals of Africa, including the Maasai. Condition: All with some shelf wear and first two with spine sunning. Slight cock to first. Generally good, but well-read.
