JONES, William and Samuel. A New Portable Orrery invented and made by W.Jones . London, Holborn, circa 1830. A fine libary orrery with telurian and outer planetary motion arms, base 7 ¾ inches diameter (20cm). The oak baseboard with hand-coloured engraved disc incorporating title label, calendar and zodiac scales, and season quadrants. Seven brass outer planetary motion arms on a separate arrangement, a geared mechanism arranged to represent the phases of the moon and the relationship of the sun and earth, with paper scale of the moon phases, planets and moons in ivory, brass spirit lamp. The orrery in it's original mahogany case 9 ½ x 8 ½ inches. William Jones first introduced his New Portable Orrery in 1782 and it was continued in similar form until the latter days of the business in the 1850's. It was based on the designs of James Ferguson who had proposed an inexpensive form of the four wheel Orrery designed for those on modest means. This example is in very fine condition with all necessary hybrid attachments. Sold with the lot is: JONES, William. The description and Use of a New Portable Orrery , London: John Jones and Son, 1787, 8°, third edition, two folding engraved explanatory plates, 4pp instrument catalogue bound in at end, modern boards.
